Arashiyama: Awesome cafe at an Edo Period Home
When I think of cafes, I think of them as my havens of modern comfort. Soft, mellow music and cozy ambient lighting enhance their inviting ambiance, a soothing balm to the outside world... aesthetics.
The rich aroma of freshly ground beans fills the air, mingling with the low hum of conversation. Comfortable seating invites solo patrons and friends to relax and enjoy the moment. Whether lost in thought, tapping away on a laptop, or leaning close over steaming mugs, each coffee sipped becomes a ritual of connection and contentment.
However, my time at Arashiyama with my loved ones and friends differed. I was taken back to the past, back to Edo-period Japan, where I enjoyed a cup of Americano coffee and a fantastic lunch pork sandwich and salad. I have to say, this wasn’t like your typical Silicon Valley cafe or you’re a Starbucks. This was a unique experience with a fantastic atmosphere.
Let’s discuss **Bread, Espresso, and Arashiyama Garden (ESPRESSO &) at Arashiyama.** Bread and Espresso is a unique chain in Japan. Most of these stores have a modern feel, with some having some unique ideas to them. With crepe and espresso at an Airstream-like trailer, the store has a porch. To sell coffee and flowers. They have numerous locations, but the one in Arashiyama might be their most unique. The reason is that it is the former residence of the Kobayashi family. This location has two buildings: the bakery, where they sell their freshly made bread and treats, and the cafe, which has a modern feel mixed with the ancient Kyoto feel. The location has a communal table sitting at the center of the building. Many other areas and rooms are tatami mat rooms or near the outside where the sides are open, and you can sit to see the garden between the two buildings. The temperature was cool and refreshing; it starkly contrasted to last week when the temps during the day exceeded nearly 38 degrees Celsius (100 F), if not more.
The rooftop of this quaint cafe was a sight to behold, with its thatched roof hanging surprisingly low, showcasing the impressive thickness of the material. As we entered, a friendly cafe worker guided us to a communal table. Before settling in, we were asked to remove our shoes and place them in plastic bags, which we carried with us to our chairs. A convenient basket was provided for our personal items.
This cafe was by far the most unique dining experience I've had. Housed in an authentic Edo period home, it blended modern comforts with historic charm. While the flooring was modern and the tatami mats were new, the upper walls and beams felt like they had stood the test of time. We were even greeted by an original rice cooking stove, a testament to the home's historical significance.
I had a delightful meal at ESPRESSO & that left me craving more. The sandwich set was a perfect combination of flavors and textures. The freshly baked bread, lightly toasted to perfection, provided a satisfying crunch with each bite. A generous portion of succulent pork delivered a burst of savory juiciness, complemented by the creamy mayonnaise.
The Americano proved to be the ideal pairing. Unlike the milder brews I've encountered elsewhere, this coffee boasted a bold character with a pleasant acidity and slightly bitter notes that danced on my palate. It was the perfect counterpoint to the richness of the sandwich.
Though tempted by the array of desserts on offer, I found the sandwich set to be wholly fulfilling. However, the experience has piqued my curiosity. I eagerly anticipate returning in autumn to savor their offerings while seated in the outdoor area. There, I imagine, I'll be treated to the spectacular sight of maple leaves turning vibrant shades of red – a feast for both the palate and the eyes.
Get ready for another adventure! Later I'll take you on a journey to Daihikaku Senkoji located on the same road as the historic Ryokan I featured in my previous post, this temple offers a serene escape from the bustling city. To reach it, simply follow the road to the right and climb the steps at the end. Stay tuned for more details on this hidden gem!
