A Serene Retreat: Takaragaike Pond

If you head southwest, you will eventually enter the Iris Garden, which, if you continue eastward, will reveal one of the most stunning views I have discovered in Kyoto so far: the Takaragaike Pond. This pond, expanded in 1959, is more like a lake than a typical pond. The scene is tranquil, with distant mountains and a deck surrounded by trees, creating a picturesque setting. Sometimes, at the deck, you can see koi fish in the water, hoping to be fed.

This is also an area where visitors can rent boats. Boat rentals come with two options: regular row boats or paddle boats. While I did not plan on riding the boat this time, I am considering it for my next visit. The paddle boat looked sturdy and promised a smooth and steady ride. The tranquil surface of the water invited a playful adventure, making exploring the pond's hidden corners by boat irresistibly fun. The boat rental was operated by two friendly older gentlemen who were kind to my girlfriend and me, providing polite responses and warm smiles. The cost of renting a paddle boat is 1,000 Yen for 30 minutes, while a row boat costs 1,000 Yen per hour.

Trails and Tranquility: Walking Paths and Wildlife

Numerous trails offer pleasant walks, and rows of lamps light your path at night. There are plenty of open areas throughout the park for anyone who wants to have a picnic, where you can lay a blanket or use a table and bench. I found a perfect spot away from the sun to lay my blanket. I could feel the cool breeze, and the conditions were just right and quiet for having a nap. The peaceful surroundings, frequented by deer and other wildlife, make it a perfect spot for wildlife photography, including birds. Depending on the season, rare, colorful birds and signs provide helpful pictures of what birds make their home or migrate to the park.

Family Fun: Children’s Park

If you have children, you'll be delighted to discover Takaragaike Park's charming children's area, featuring an expansive play zone. Boasting an array of captivating and engaging activities, it's the perfect destination for boundless family enjoyment. Additionally, parents can relax in the shaded seating area while watching their children play. During my visit, I observed the children's excitement as they climbed what appeared to be a small hill and gleefully slid down from it. It's a place where boredom is not a word that exists here for them. So why not plan your next outing here? With its serene views to the north of the city, it promises a tranquil escape for the whole family.
